– Mercer’s argument that “everyone always expects a self-regarding end when they act intentionally” is valid because the reason many do things is because of the promise that they will get something back in return. I was taught do good to others and good will comeback to you. I do good to people because I’m a good person. I’ve sat down in the middle of downtown with total strangers who were homeless. We talked and ate I didn’t look at them any different than another person and I didn’t sit down in the middle of downtown looking for something in return. In someone else’s eye they may have had many opinions on why I did what I did. To get back on track the premise isn’t true which makes the statement not sound. The statement can only be true for some not “everyone” is looking for something in return. There a great deal of us out here who will do for others because we just want to.
