I think most folks agrees that some climatic changes are taking place. The issue of whether man is the main cause I believe arguable. The fact is, any warming may be part of natural cycles and even a solar component may be involved. (The Sun is going through a strange period of inactivity – no sunspots, and scientists are trying to figure out why. The Earth has been at least 100 C warmer during the Cretaceous Period (time of the dinosaurs) (and other times in the past) than it is presently. And think about this. The climate is ALWAYS changing over time. It would change whether there are humans on the planet or not. So man’s activities may affect the climate, but the climate will change anyway. It’s just a matter of how it will change. (Hence the topic of research topic number 1).


There are many complex interactions that are presently being studied and new sources and sinks of greenhouse gases recently have been identified, such as methane hydrates. The methane gas evolved from these ocean deposits provides large amounts of methane to the atmosphere. This is a much more powerful greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. So to say any warming is the result of just burning fossil fuel is too simplistic. And several Global Warming models actually predict that the east coast of the US (especially the mid-Atlantic would actually COOL due to associated changes in the Gulf Stream and Labrador Current. And what about the sinks of carbon dioxide. If we cut down trees and don’t replace them, then we are removing a regulator of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. (BTW, the sinks were never included in the original models proposed in the 1980s and early 90s.So the predicted increases in temperature were overestimates.)

Finally, those who say the facts are in – end of discussion, they dishonor the scientific process. A good scientist always questions and probes current thinking. That’s how science advances knowledge and understanding. We thought the universe was expanding, but slowing in this expansion until it was determined (it took scientists two years to finally agree) that the universe is expanding at an accelerated rate. But guess what, some scientists are now presenting evidence that this may not be the case after all!
